Will Ford F-150 Lightning Leases Be Good?

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning offers attention-grabbing capabilities at a low starting price. But will it be a good vehicle to hire? If the F-150 Lightning offerings turn out to be anything like those of the Mustang Mach-E, we think it’s possible that the all-new EV’s incentives could potentially make it of questionable value to consumers.

With an MSRP starting at under $ 40,000, the F-150 Lightning certainly looks like a steal. However, a closer look reveals that Ford’s entry-level Lightning model will in fact be marketed to fleet customers. Going for the mid-range XLT version will bring the price up to nearly $ 53,000, with high-end models reaching $ 90,000.

In theory, a federal tax credit of $ 7,500 could make the Lightning cheaper to buy than the gasoline-powered F-150. But the point is, Ford Credit does not pass the credit on to the renters of the Mustang Mach-E. Typically, electric vehicle manufacturers claim the credit and then pass the savings on to consumers in the form of a manufacturer’s rebate called leasing.

With the Mustang Mach-E, Ford Credit’s official explanation is: “Due to complex tax realities, Ford Credit would get less than the $ 7,500 federal tax credit the typical owner would realize if they bought the car. . ” A spokesperson was unable to confirm whether this will also be the case with the F-150 Lightning.

Our Mach-E cost comparison found that leasing is much less attractive than a balloon finance incentive called the Ford Options Plan. The program promises leasing-type payments with the possibility of returning your vehicle once the contract is in force. But it also forces consumers to make sure they are entitled to the full value of the tax credit.

Given the popularity of leasing among truck buyers, we think this is an important detail that could determine whether the F-150 Lightning will be a good deal or not. There’s also the fact that Ford is banning Mach-E dealers from posting prices below the MSRP, which could also apply to the F-150.

While it’s still too early to draw a conclusion, these are questions that could impact an F-150 Lightning buyer’s bottom line. For now, Ford is making it easy to get started with a refundable reservation fee of $ 100 before official orders begin this fall ahead of the pickup’s planned spring launch in 2022.
