What Veljko Paunovic told his players after Reading FC received a six-point deduction from the EFL

Reading FC boss Veljko Paunovic said he told his players all eyes would be on them last week after being eliminated by six points.

The Royals were punished in the middle of the November international break by the English Football League (EFL) for breaking the rules for profit and sustainability.

The decision saw them lower the league table and now sees them fighting to avoid relegation to League One.

Paunovic’s side have just completed a three-game week which saw them draw 1-1 with Nottingham Forest, lose 1-0 to Sheffield United and beat Swansea City 3-2 in South Wales.

The victory over Swansea, inspired by new striker Andy Carroll, eased the pressure on everyone involved at the club after the EFL punishment.

“There was a great cohesion between the players and the fans who were there,” Paunovic said. “We were very grateful to them and for their support which was very important.

“To build momentum now we have players returning from injury and for the first time we have a whole squad available together.

“It’s an organic situation where we can get the guys back and use the good feeling that this win propels into the future.

“Making a statement last week was very important. I told the players after the points are deducted, this week everyone will be watching us so we need a result as soon as possible.

“We have to make a statement and we achieved that with the Swansea game. Now we have to build momentum so that we can catch up with those ahead of us in the standings.”

Reading’s next game will be at home against the other Hull City players at Select Car Leasing Stadium on Saturday, December 4th.

This is followed by a trip to West Bromwich Albion the following Saturday ahead of a home game with Luton Town on Saturday 18th December before the team embark on their three games over the holiday season.
