The music of Motown’s Marvin Gaye is legendary for putting people in the mood for “sex healing.”
So, as Valentine’s Day approached, a UK zoo wondered if they could get the endangered monkeys to say “Let’s go” too.
The furry inhabitants of Trentham Monkey Forest in Stafford, England, have received emotional encouragement from a Gaye impersonator. David Largie performed some of Gaye’s classic hits in the Barbary macaque habitat to get them in the breeding mood.
“We thought this might be a creative way to encourage our females to show some affection to the males who might not have been so lucky in love,” park superintendent Matt Lovatt said. on the zoo’s website.
“Females in season mate with multiple males, so paternity among our furry residents is never known. Each birth is vital to the species, with Barbary macaques listed as endangered.
About 8,000 to 10,000 remain in the wild, according to the Barbary Macaque Awareness & Conservation organization.
The zoo says the animals engaged in foreplay-like grooming and teeth chattering, so it’s possible the tactic worked.
Birth season is in late spring or early summer.
“Hopefully Marvin has done his magic and we can welcome new babies,” Lovatt said.
