NORTHAMPTON, ENGLAND, June 16, 2022 /EINPresswire.com/ — Travis Perkins plc is investing in a new fleet of 26-tonne trucks, designed to support the group’s ambitious carbon reduction target and maximize safety and efficiency of its transport operations. They will operate in a mix of Travis Perkins and Keyline Civils Specialist liveries, supplying construction materials to construction customers nationwide.
The multi-million pound investment will see around 170 rear-steered Volvo FM 330 6×2 forwarders entering service over two years – with 85 new FMs confirmed for this year; which will be followed by around 85 more in 2023. It follows a strategic review of the fleet by the company led by Fleet Technical Director Karl Wilshaw, which saw the evaluation of several options from several major manufacturers of trucks.
The new vehicles are an integral part of the Group’s fleet decarbonisation roadmap, each benefiting from the latest Euro VI Step E diesel engine technology – designed to reduce emissions and help save fuel without compromising performance – and with the ability to work with hydrotreated vegetables. Petroleum (HVO).
This will allow Travis Perkins plc to deploy the trucks to a number of locations where HVO has been enabled through a trial using certified HVO, which began in 2021 and includes 30 branches and 200 trucks nationwide.
Key to winning the order was the latest generation FM’s ability to support in-cab ‘tech detox’, with the latest Volvos being able to integrate multiple vehicle safety systems to optimize safety by decluttering the environment of the driver. Thus, the FM’s nine-inch side screen integrates feeds from the five-camera setup and Travis Perkins’ on-board weigh-in system, reducing the need for additional monitors. The modern architecture of the FM also offers a perfect interface with the body and the crane.
The in-depth group review gathered feedback from national driver engagement days, safety events and a series of driver focus groups, which were held to explore future business requirements, fleet customers and drivers. This directly led to the choice of the FM Day Cab which combines excellent vision with plenty of storage space, as well as easy entry and egress with two step entry and wide opening doors.
At the request of drivers, the new fleet also has additional lighting and additional tie-down points. Travis Perkins’ in-house team worked closely with Abdi Ali, National Key Account Manager at Volvo Trucks UK & Ireland, to tailor specifications to ensure sufficient ground clearance to navigate construction sites safely , while ensuring that the cabin meets the three-star line-of-sight standard. Key to this was the selection of 385/55 R22.5 steer tires and 315/70 R22.5 drive and tag axles.
The trucks also benefit from a nine-tonne front axle, a 12-speed I-Shift automated transmission and an improved turning radius from the 18-tonne they replace, thanks to the steered trailing axle. hydraulics from Volvo.
Wilshaw says, “It’s been so rewarding for everyone involved to see this project come to fruition; A huge amount of work has gone into consulting with our drivers, researching the latest technology available and developing the build with Volvo Trucks, bodybuilder Massey Truck Engineering and crane supplier HIAB. We are really happy with the result. We have FORS Gold accreditation, and these trucks fit directly into our continuous improvement efforts. They look fantastic and they allow our teams to operate more efficiently and safely.
The new fleet will be primarily serviced and serviced within the Volvo Trucks dealer network, with the order including a mix of 5,200mm and 5,600mm wheelbases, to meet the varied needs of different branches of the business. They will join a fleet of 1,600 utility vehicles and will operate up to six days a week, covering approximately 30,000 miles per year.
All of the new trucks feature a smart cabin interior benefiting from Volvo’s Drive Pack, which adds remote central locking, dual armrests, electrically controlled air conditioning and a tinted glass roof hatch. Travis Perkins also chose sturdy textile seats with a smart vinyl interior. In addition, for maximum safety, the cabin is equipped with roof beacons, passenger side lower door window to improve direct vision, side proximity sensors, left turn audible warning, a five-camera vision system and a white noise back-up alarm. The body was manufactured by Massey Truck Engineering.
