Legal retirement age? 958,000 Britons are £ 1.8bn short – are you one of them? | Personal Finances | Finance

At least £ 15 billion in benefits went unclaimed last year, the national anti-poverty charity Turn2us has warned. Over 7.1 million people have missed out on these benefits, increasing their risk of ending up in financial hardship or even poverty.

The charity found that 63% of this age group had never checked out.

Retirees are also the least likely to claim the benefits to which they are entitled, with one in three not receiving the pension credit – a benefit some people above retirement age may be entitled to.

In response to this issue, Turn2us has released a new benefit calculator.

It was designed in partnership with people who have experienced the expertise.

The charity is urging people to verify their rights and start the application process as soon as possible.

Sonya Ruparel, Director of Programs and Partnerships at Turn2us, said: “There is an endemic problem of unclaimed benefits in the UK.

“The confused, sometimes hostile and often stigmatizing world of social security has led millions of people not to claim their rights.

“Our new tool aims to simplify, demystify and compassionately help people access the money they are owed.

It takes about 10 minutes to find out what benefits a person is entitled to and can help users start the application process.

It is user-friendly for people of all digital abilities, and the Turn2us helpline can perform calculations for people without internet access.

Additionally, the tool clarifies the implications of choosing between staying on legacy benefits over universal credit, and whether individuals are eligible for a move.

Turn2us also highlighted how 503,000 people failed to claim £ 775million in family allowances.
