Swap Milton Keynes in London for Bergen in Kirkness

Milton Keynes in London: Monthly pass for zones 1 to 6, from £ 1,002
Bergen to Kirkness: from £ 1,009

The cheapest way to explore a selection of Norway’s fjords, mountains, islands and waterfalls from the comfort of Hurtigruten ships is to take the classic line trip north. Three meals a day are included in your rate, as is time spent in port. You can go on excursions, such as a mountain hike in the 35 km long Hjørundfjord in Alesund or (during winter or spring sailing) a dog sled expedition to the island of Kvaloya.

The route crosses the ideal Arctic Circle, in winter, to chase the Northern Lights. On board Hurtigruten ships, expect you would find a more flashy cruise line. Unlike your typical cruise, of course, you can take your car with you.

Swap Watford Junction in London for Anacorte in Friday Harbor

From Watford Junction to London Euston: £ 11.10
Anacorte at Friday Harbor: $ 14.50 / £ 10.58

The San Juan Islands offer great whale watching opportunities and while you can book a dedicated tour, you can simply take the ferry from the mainland. Sail from the town of Anacortes to San Juan Island. Some daily schedules include stops at Anacortes, Lopez Island, Shaw Island, and Orcas Island. The United States is reopened to vaccinated Britons in November. However, mid-June to early September is the best time to capture cetaceans. Orcas are the biggest draw, but you might also see Minke and Humpback. Other wildlife to watch out for include the Dallas porpoise, harbor porpoise, and bald eagle. The islands themselves are worth a visit. Take Lopez, which is about half the size of the other islands. It has an overabundance of farms, pretty berries, and a friendly, laid back attitude. You can even book a guest room or chalet for a night or two to fully enjoy it.
