10 facts everyone should know about BMW

Bayerische Motoren Werke, or BMW as we commonly call it, was founded as a manufacturer of aircraft engines in 1916. Its first product was an inline-six engine, a configuration for which it is today famous in his cars. However, designer Max Friz had a better idea for an aircraft engine using just four cylinders. The IIIA engine was said to have been renamed by the Red Baron, the most successful fighter pilot of World War I, calling it “the greatest engine”. It was revolutionary, and demand from the military ensured the growth and expansion of BMW during WWI.

After the war, BMW was banned by the Allies from making airplane engines, and started making everything from farm equipment to household items. This included motorcycle engines, and BMW built its first motorcycle in 1923. In 1928, BMW produced its first car by buying out a company that built licensed British Austin Sevens. After WWII, which is the darkest part of BMW’s history, the company was banned from making motor vehicles or airplanes and survived making pots, pans and pedal bikes. . It is a true wonder that BMW survived to be here over 100 years later, let alone as a renowned manufacturer of sports luxury cars. The brand has thrived, however, and brought us some amazing cars. Here are some things you probably didn’t know about BMW.
